Fort Worth Zoo and Other Fort Worth Attractions
Fort Worth has a wide range of interesting and fun attractions — like the Fort Worth Zoo, the Stockyards and world-class museums — that will keep you busy for days if you’re visiting the city and that become welcome parts of your life when you live here.
Fort Worth Zoo
Perhaps the top attraction in the city is the Fort Worth Zoo. Often cited as one of the best zoos in the country, it is far superior to the difficult-to-navigate Dallas Zoo. At the Fort Worth Zoo, animals are close enough to see but far enough away to assure their protection.
A boardwalk raises visitors to a good viewing height through much of the park, plus a Texas-themed area explores local wildlife. Children also enjoy feeding the birds inside a densely populated and amazingly entertaining aviary.
While some people try to find Fort Worth Zoo coupons to reduce the cost of their visit, the best advice is to go on Wednesdays when admission is half price. If you’d rather save your nerves than your money, avoid weekends and busy Wednesdays — especially in the summer — and aim to arrive around noon on a Tuesday or Thursday.
Fort Worth Stockyards
For gay and lesbian people in Fort Worth, the whole city is welcoming. Gay Fort Worth isn’t a distinct neighborhood, it’s part of everyday life for thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people in Tarrant County.
Cowboy culture — something that appeals to some gays and lesbians — is alive and well in the Fort Worth Stockyards. While certainly not a gay area, it’s a great place for window shopping. Real cowboys — and cowgirls too — mix with tourists and others to create an eclectic atmosphere during the day and in the evenings. For gay clubbing, look elsewhere.
Visit the Fort Worth Stockyards for the daily cattle drive and to ride the authentic steam train to nearby shopping mecca Grapevine.
Fort Worth Botanic Gardens and Trinity Park
Enjoy the carefully manicured outdoors at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens — often wrongly called the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. Dating from the 1930s and with new garden areas and plantings being added all the time, it’s one of the most beautiful spots in town.
The new home of the BRIT — the Botanical Research Institute of Texas — studies plants and displays dried specimens in a beautiful new eco-friendly building in front of the Botanic Gardens.
Across the street, Trinity Park is one of the easiest ways to access the scenic Trinity River’s trail system. There’s also plenty of room for picnicking and experiencing the joys of resting on a park bench.
Fort Worth Museum Opportunities and More
While it’s impossible to mention all Fort Worth events and detail all Fort Worth activities in one short article, no discussion of the city’s amenities would be complete without mentioning the museums.
Hip, modern visitors to gay Fort Worth will especially enjoy the Modern Art Museum and its concrete and glass building.
For those with children in tow, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History sports a modern new facility and an IMAX dome theater.
Perhaps the best known museum in town is the Kimbell Art Museum. Known around the world for its carefully chosen permanent collection and touring special exhibits, the Kimbell is now adding more space in a separate building that will adjoin the current architectural masterpiece via a great lawn.
Gay Fort Worth Is Waiting
No, the Fort Worth Zoo isn’t a gay attraction. And neither are the Stockyards, the parks or any of the museums. But Fort Worth is a welcoming city that doesn’t segregate it’s gay and lesbian people from the rest of its citizens. In Fort Worth, a whole city awaits every visitor.
