Where Does Fort Worth Fit Into The Gay Texas Scene?

Texas is overgrown with large cities, including Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. But cities like Fort Worth and Austin would be considered huge in some states.

So how does Fort Worth fit into a state with so many bigger cities to overshadow it? After all, gay culture flourishes in the biggest cities doesn’t it?

There’s no doubt Fort Worth’s gay community has been slightly hindered and stunted by being so close Dallas, a city with a very organized gay and lesbian community.

But most Fort Worth residents don’t mind leaving the high-profile stuff to those people to the East.

Fort Worth’s gay and lesbian community may not be as visible as those in Gay Houston world or Gay Dallas, but that doesn’t mean this cowboys-and-culture city doesn’t offer a rich and vibrant experience for gays and lesbians. In fact, gays and lesbians are visible at every level of Fort Worth society.

Today’s Gay Fort Worth is very much like Gay Austin.

In fact, Fort Worth’s culture and community mirrors Austin’s in many ways. While Austin once had a firm hold on the title of weirdest and wildest city in Texas, things have changed in recent years.

Thanks to new development and increasingly liberal political and social views, Gay Fort Worth today is what Gay Austin was only a few years ago: amazingly diverse, integrated and fun.

Dallas has a well-deserved reputation for snobbery and style over substance, but what you see is what you get in Fort Worth.

Gay Houston is very similar to Gay Dallas, except with even more traffic problems, longer commutes and more urban sprawl.

While there’s no doubt gay clubs, restaurants and organizations in Dallas and Houston have a higher profile than those in Fort Worth, Cowtown still sports a handful of gay clubs and several organizations, including the well-respect Q Cinema film festival that offers event every month.

San Antonio is an economically challenged city that celebrates diversity in many ways, too, but having Austin so close and Houston also nearby seems to have severely stunted the growth of San Antonio’s gay and lesbian community.

The Gay Texas story looks even bleaker when you consider the state’s other cities. Places like Abilene, Amarillo and El Paso deserve better than they’re getting.

But this article is about Fort Worth’s place in the Gay Texas world. It’s a place of honor, really.

While Dallas has glitz and Houston has mass, Fort Worth has integration, depth and fun.
